Education and Competition
Leadership teams at the chorus, regional, and international levels are committed to promoting the unique American artform of Barbershop harmony by providing members with a variety of educational opportunities. In addition to ensemble singing and personal vocal development, members can receive training and certification in directing and music arranging in the Barbershop style, or attend seminars on a variety of chorus management skills.
Upper Chesapeake Chorus (UCC) arranges sessions with experienced coaches from across the country several times a year including two retreats. In addition to visiting coaches, private vocal instruction is offered by our director, Rick Taylor, who is an accomplished Barbershop vocal coach in his own right.
UCC is an achievement-oriented chorus, consistently ranked in the top five among the 27 choruses in Sweet Adeline Region 19 which includes Maryland, Delaware, and portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and West Virginia. UCC is the proud recipient of two Regional Chorus Championships in 2011 and 2013. Our chorus has competed internationally twice, in Denver 2012 and Baltimore 2014. We also competed at Harmony Classic in 2011, a competition for the top five mid-sized and small choruses.
